Georgia compact licensing

Georgia participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact. An eligible nurse with a multistate RN or LPN/VN license can practice in other participating states under the compact. A Georgia single-state license does not become multistate automatically: verify the individual’s actual license and practice privilege.

What changes when a nurse moves?

NCSBN’s compact guidance says a nurse moving between compact states must apply for licensure in the new primary state of residence within 60 days1. That is an application deadline, not a promise that a license will be issued in that time.

Ask which state is the nurse’s legal primary residence, which state issued the multistate license and where the work will occur. A temporary assignment and a change of legal residence are different situations.

How do you check the practice privilege?

Use the issuing board and Nursys to check multistate status and relevant restrictions1. For a Georgia license, start with the Georgia Board of Nursing2. Save the exact source result with its timestamp. State participation alone does not prove a particular nurse holds the required privilege.

The compact does not replace the organization’s role requirements, health checks or start decision. Keep those tasks visible beside the license check. Our guides to Georgia RN and Georgia LPN checks cover the Georgia record.

What does the compact leave separate?

The RN/LPN compact is not a physician licensing route or an APRN authorization. A team hiring several professions needs distinct requirements, sources and owners for each role. For physicians, see the Georgia physician guide.

Work backward from the proposed start. If a residency change or source discrepancy is unresolved, record that dependency and the next follow-up instead of treating the date as fixed. Resolve the licensing route early, and keep the remaining start requirements moving in parallel.
